Ms. Luker joins the firm after serving a six month term as Judge Pro Tempore for Civil District Court by appointment of the Louisiana Supreme Court from July to December 2014.
Her areas of practice have included complex litigation, business disputes, maritime litigation (offshore oil and gas contract disputes, personal injury and property damage claims), employment discrimination, construction law, bad faith insurance claims, unfair trade practice claims, toxic torts (silica, asbestos, benzene, lead paint, noise), civil RICO, environmental matters, and product liability litigation. Ms. Luker served as national counsel for multiple clients in mass tort and multi-party litigation (class action, multi-district litigation, and consolidated cases), directing, training, and appearing in court with local attorneys across the country and as trial counsel, giving her a unique understanding of the client's perspective. She is the designated first call for certain clients when faced with environmental subpoenas and/or investigations.
She is Co-Director of the Trial Advocacy Program as well as the Pre-Trial Civil Litigation Boot Camp, and, with Magistrate Judge Karen Wells Roby, co-teaches the first course on eDiscovery and Evidence at Tulane. An Adjunct Faculty for over 30 years, she has received the Tulane Distinguished Teaching Award. She was also the recipient of the 2015 Tulane Law School Environmental Law Distinguished Alumna of the Year award.
Ms. Luker has been named as a SuperLawyer each year since 2007 (and appeared as the cover story for the 2015 edition), a Leader in Law by New Orleans CityBusiness, a Woman of the Year twice, and as one of the Best Lawyers in America since 2009. She holds an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell and is a Proctor in Admiralty in the Maritime Law Association. She was named a Role Model by the Young Leadership Council. She is also the immediate past Chair of the National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms. She is also the former President of the University of New Orleans Alumni Association.
Professional and Civic Activities
Ms. Luker is a former President of the Tulane American Inn of Court and remains an active member of the Inn.
Ms. Luker is currently Chair of the Louisiana State Bar Association (LSBA) Civil Law & Litigation Section, and is a member of the LSBA Continuing Legal Education Committee, the LSBA Legislation Committee, and LSBA Committee on the Profession. She was the recipient of the LSBA Human Rights Award for her work in the area of diversity and inclusion.
By appointment of the Louisiana Supreme Court, Ms. Luker served on the Louisiana Judiciary Commission, where she was elected vice-chair for two years and chair for her fourth and final year on the commission. She has also served, by appointment of the Louisiana Supreme Court, on the Judicial Campaign Oversight Committee.
Ms. Luker is the former chair of the American Bar Association (ABA) Tort and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) Toxic Tort Committee and also the former chair of the Admiralty Law Committee. She is also the former chair of the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC) Maritime and Energy Law Committee, and she served on the faculty of the IADC National Trial Academy.
Ms. Luker also served as Co-Director for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) for many years for both its Trial and Deposition programs, and is a frequent presenter at continuing legal education programs locally and nationally on a variety of subjects, including substantive areas, trial practice, professionalism, and ethics. She has served as co-chair of the New Orleans Bar Association (NOBA) Masters of the Courtroom program for several years, and is currently chair of its Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee. She has also served on the Board of the New Orleans Federal Bar Association.
